n an interview with The Washington Post back in 2005, local developer and president of Donatelli Developers, Christopher Donatelli, discussed the changes beginning to take shape in Columbia Heights. He noted, “The impact is going to be huge. If you left for a year or two and then came back, you might not recognize it.” Sure enough, vast, sweeping change has been one of the few constants in Columbia Heights for some time now. The past few years have seen the skyline along 14th Street NW perpetually dotted with towering cranes and buildings in various stages of demolition, renovation and construction.
Today, “Now Open!” “Coming Soon!” “Now Hiring!” and “Grand Opening!” signs enthusiastically proclaim the re-awakening of new restaurants, shops and retail centers that are bursting onto the scene. Recently and nearly completed condominiums and apartments invite visitors to consider making this wonderfully diverse part of the District their home. Together, the dynamic energy and emerging landscape of Columbia Heights are commanding the rest of the area to take notice. The revitalization that is taking place is a testament to the strength and heart of this northwest D.C. neighborhood.
Neighbors and residents of Columbia Heights aren’t the only members of the community paying close attention to the progress unfolding. Much of the neighborhood’s redevelopment and revitalization has captured the attention of the entire D.C. metro area – and beyond. Major national retailers are choosing this neighborhood to make their fi rst foray into the D.C. market, while a number of local small businesses are realizing their dreams in this hot new destination.
